The North Eastern Council (NEC) is a statutory body established in 1971 to promote economic and social development in the North Eastern Region (NER) of India.

The objectives of the NEC are:

1. To accelerate economic growth and development in the NER.
2. To promote inter-state and intra-state regional cooperation.
3. To ensure balanced and equitable development across the region.
4. To identify and address the unique challenges faced by the region.
5. To facilitate coordination and cooperation between the states and the Central Government.
6. To promote people-to-people contact and cultural exchange.
7. To support infrastructure development, including transport, communication, and tourism.
8. To enhance education, healthcare, and skill development opportunities.
9. To promote sustainable development and environmental conservation.
10. To facilitate research and innovation in the region.

Overall, the NEC plays a crucial role in promoting the overall development of the North Eastern Region and ensuring that the region’s unique challenges are addressed.
