HISTORY OF MEDICAL DEPARTMENT SIAHA

One Health Subsidiary Dispensary had been established at Tipa by the British in 1916 which can be regarded as the first of this kind in the present district of independent India. Dr. Thuama became the first Medical Officer followed by Dr. Chawnghranga and Dr. Thanglura later on. Another 10 bedded Health Subsidiary Dispensary were established at Vahia and Bualpui ‘NG’ in 1952. Later on, another 10 bedded Health Subsidiary Dispensary was established at Siaha in 1956, which gradually became the center of health in this area regardless of the presence of other Subsidiary Dispensaries owing to the central location of Siaha in this area. Z.Lianthuami was the first Nurse (Midwifery) and Mr. Pialrala was the 1st  Compounder in the dispensary. It was upgraded to the position of District Hospital for Chhimtuipui District in 1979. From 1979 the District Hospital was under the control of Civil Surgeon (C.S.).

  4. Dr. Felix Vensanga 24th February, 1989 to 30th August, 1989.

The name of the designation Civil Surgeon was changed to District Chief Medical & Health Officer (DCM&HO). The names of the former District Chief Medical & Health Officer (DCM&HO) of Chhimtuipui District with their period in office can be mentioned as :-

The name of the designation District Chief Medical & Health Officer was again changed to Chief Medical Officer (C.M.O.) in 1999 prior to the division of Chhimtuipui District into Saiha District and Lawngtlai District in 1998. Due to the division of Directorate of Health & Family Welfare into Directorate of Health Services and Directorate of Health & Medical Officer in 2008, District Hospital of Saiha is also put under the control of Medical Superitendent and is responsible for the administration in the hospital only while the Chief Medical Officer is responsible for the administration in the C.M.O.’s office, 4 Primary Health Centres, 24 Sub-Centres and 9 Health Clinics in the district.

CMO & Medical Superintendent has no support of Senior Medical Officers, Doctor or nurse trained in Public health to assist him in programme management and epidemiology services are absent. Material and other logistics management staff are in shortage. Health staffs to ensure food and water safety are lacking.
